Imagine if you will, a sort of Spanish speaking Edith Piaf with a deeper and infinitely more sultry voice and your’re on the right road. …
Coca Tenorio “Cold Like Stones” album launch with a little help from Liam Ó Maonlai (Irish musician)
"She sent me a copy of her record and we like it already in our car…all of us that’s unanimous…it’s a record that been made for people, for the heart, for women. My wife picked up on that straight away – literally she did!"
Her voice reminds me of Celia Cruz the Queen of Salsa….El Testigo stands out as the track with the most feeling and the strong lyrics add to the dramatic effect. I love the Andean influence in this one and I shall be playing this on next week’s show.
...Tenorio works through a set that showcases her dark, husky voice to great effect..... Tenorio's songs although deeply personal have an accessible universality, especially the celebratory "Professor Tenorio" and the poignant "Close Your Eyes" and beautifully realised nostalgia of "Where the Sun and the Sky Kiss the Mountains (Home). To these ears it's the Spanish language that works best, particularly the passionate "El Testigo" and "Estrella Fugaz" where her voice truly soars
Wednesdays featured artist : Coca Tenorio. This amazing lady from Ecuador is now based in the Highlands of Scotland. Her new album Cold Like Stones is superb. It features musicians from Scotland, Ecuador, Cuba & Colombia and is sung in both English and Spanish. I need to see this lady live. In fact I think we all do !
Coca Tenorio's self-produced solo album is another very accomplished piece of work.... her versatile voice evokes her Latin-American roots with assurance.☆☆☆☆
Just once in a while an album arrives in unexpected fashion and you hear a new original voice. These songs of life and love have poignant undercurrents but no unnecessary drama: they are utterly convincing☆☆☆☆
Coca Tenorios vibrant, serenading voice moves from celebration to yearning, through melodies Andean, Latin and South American. Grounded in undulating Afro-Latin rhythms. The musicianship is stunning and Coca Tenorio is a real find.☆☆☆☆
